Mentor Graphics Adds NewLogic 802.11 Wireless LAN Platform to Growing Wireless Semiconductor IP Portfolio
WILSONVILLE, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 28, 2002--Mentor Graphics
Corporation (Nasdaq:MENT) today announced an extension to its
remarketing agreement with NewLogic, a leading supplier of
semiconductor intellectual property (IP) cores for wireless systems,
to include the WiLD(TM) 802.11 Wireless LAN platform.
The agreement allows System-on-Chip (SoC) designers to get system
designs to market faster by licensing a complete platform for wireless
LAN IC development from Mentor Graphics.
The 802.11 wireless platform complements Universal Serial Bus
(USB), Bluetooth(TM) and other standards-based IP offerings in the
Mentor Graphics® Inventra(TM) family, enabling the company to
further address growth in the consumer electronic, computing and home
networking markets.
"802.11 is a complex standard with multiple variants," said Mike
Kaskowitz, general manager of the Mentor Graphics Intellectual
Property division. "Developing complete hardware and software IP
solutions to support this standard requires almost 30-people years of
extensive engineering effort. Through our extended marketing agreement
with NewLogic, the industry leader in wireless IP, we are able to
provide customers with a pre-verified IP platform that brings
standards-based functionality to their end products without the time
and cost associated with developing a solution from scratch."
Analysts Predict Billion Dollar Growth for WLAN Equipment by 2005
With a bandwidth of 11-Mbit/sec and an operating frequency of 2.4
GHz, 802.11b is the standard wireless networking technology for
enterprise and home applications. Gartner Research predicts the total
worldwide market for wireless LAN (WLAN) equipment will grow by a
compound annual growth rate of 22 percent, reaching almost $3.4
billion by 2005 (source: LE-15-6447 15 March 2002). Impending
improvements to this wireless networking protocol, including .11g,
.11e and .11i, will dramatically increase the connectivity options for
personal computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and home
networking devices.
The WiLD platform includes the multi standard WiLD 802.11a/b/g MAC
core and the WiLD(TM) 802.11b Modem (physical layer). It will be
complemented soon by the WiLD 802.11a and g Modems, the WiLD
802.11a/b/g dual band CMOS Radio and the 802.11e/i/h software upgrade
options once the respective standards are ratified. In addition,
extensive integration support, a dedicated prototyping platform (WiLD
Card I) and full turnkey integration services to help designers meet
aggressive time-to-market plans.
"Communications convergence, especially in home networking, is
driving the need for applications that support multiple wireless and
wireline standards," said Maha Osman, chief operating officer,
NewLogic. "Our WiLD platform supports the most popular wireless
high-speed networking protocol. NewLogic's continued collaboration
with Mentor Graphics provides access to a broader set of SoC designers
who not only want the highest-quality IP cores but also the
integration expertise to ease its use in a design."
Availability
The WiLD platform that includes the multi standard WiLD
802.11a/b/g MAC core and the WiLD(TM) 802.11b Modem is available for
immediate licensing. For pricing and a complete list of Inventra IP
